There is not one, but two elections today that will impact our state. We are all watching the Massachusetts Senate Race, but don’t forget about the B’ham mayors race.
My early prediction on the that mayors race is that Patrick Cooper is in real trouble. Frontrunners should avoid getting in a runoff at all cost because your closest opponent becomes a legitimate contender and will be able to raise money. Cooper might pull off a win but his likelihood of becoming the next Mayor of B’ham would be much better if he had done these things differently:

CONSULTANT CANDID
His Future Is Bright
Thursday, June 18, 2009
David Mowery announced last month that he was opening Mowery Consulting Group, LLC, in Montgomery, AL, a full-service general campaign firm. Mowery managed now-Rep. Bobby Bright’s (D-AL) ’08 campaign. In addition to leading the Bright camp, Mowery also ran Todd Strange’s (D) subsequent bid to replace Bright as mayor of Montgomery. But today, he is our Consultant Candid.
What was your first job?
In life — I was a busboy at an Italian Restaurant when I was 15. In politics — Deputy Finance Director for Governor Don Siegelman’s re-election campaign (2001).
What is your proudest moment professionally?
Every win is sweet, and every defeat is bitter, so to pick one win over the other is obviously very hard. I have had the honor to work with so many amazing people that I am going to be selfish and say that the outpouring of support and the coverage …

One of the most heralded campaign managers of the last year is launching his own consulting firm.
David Mowery, who guided Democrat Bobby Bright to victory in one of the reddest districts held by Democrats, has announced the formation of Mowery Consulting Group LLC.
Bright, the formerly independent mayor of Montgomery, didn’t raise as much money as some Democrats would have liked. But he still defeated state Rep. Jay Love (R) in November’s general election, even as Republican presidential nominee John McCain won 63 percent in the district.

Mowery then turned around and, four months later, got Montgomery County Commission Chairman Todd Strange elected to replace Bright as mayor. In a field of six candidates, Strange took more than 50 percent of the vote and avoided a runoff. The Hill

Dave Mowery, the man who guided Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright to victory in Alabama’s 2nd district last year and then elected Todd Strange to Bright’s old position earlier this year, is starting his own consulting firm named, appropriately, Mowery Consulting Group. “I have a proven ability to not only raise money but to show candidates how to spend that money in the most effective manner and to win races,” said Mowery of his new shop. The firm will be based in Montgomery, joining Democratic pollster John Anzalone in the Cradle of the Confederacy. The Fix

Montgomery Advertiser Political Reporter Sebastien Kitchen’s write up of our new venture.
The man who successfully managed the campaigns of Bobby Bright and Todd Strange has formed his own campaign consulting group.
David Mowery of Montgomery announced the formation of the Mowery Consulting Group LLC on Thursday. He opened the full-service campaign consulting group with New Media Director Patrick Cagle.
Mowery managed Bright’s campaign as the former Montgomery mayor became the first Democrat elected to represent the 2nd Congressional District since the 1960s.
Chris Cillizza, political writer for The Washington Post and author of the blog The Fix, named the Bright campaign one of the top House campaigns of the year.
Mowery was then tapped to manage the mayoral campaign for Strange, who was then the chairman of the Montgomery County Commission. Strange is a Republican, although candidates for municipal office in Montgomery do not have to declare a party affiliation. He beat out a …
